Next to Hemingway, I am reading “Gone with the wind”
by Margaret Mitchell. It is a classic novel and this is the 2nd time
to read since my junior high school days. To be honest, it is boring as so
many pages are devoting much space to emotional expression of Scarlett O’Hara. I’m
not interested in such psychological description of woman but it helps me to
know how south people survived at civil war era. Captain Butler made success for
his trading business using his 4 ships that took advantage of the confusion.
Anyway this kind of business sense is important as of today. Due to spread of
infection of coronavirus, major companies are beginning to bankrupt. Nieman
Marcus, Virgin Australia and retail giant JC Penney are named. In Japan, big
fabrication company Renown applied for civil rehabilitation this week that I shocked
very much. Its CM song was popular in 1980s with dancing girls and Alain Delon
made French lesson narrating "c'est l'elegance de l'homme moderne" in D'Urban CM film that reminds me of my young days. More shops and companies may suffer damage by virus and are obliged to stop their normal life of business. However unlucky may also bring an oppotunity of success. Remember captain Butler in south who made a fortune and grabbed Scarlett's heart !
I like to see the old DVD based on Ernest Hemingway novels. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Old Man and the Sea" are good that makes me overlap with Hemigway's adventurous life. I feel an affinity with "A Farewell to Arms" since I visted the Italian border named Kobarid three years ago. It was a battlefield called Caporretto in WWI that an American soldier Gary Cooper in the movie ran away for seeking his fiance. I took a walk in the mountain for a hour and found a lot of trench ruins that reminded me of fierce battle more 100 years ago.
If I were asked by someone which is the best film, I should say it is "The Snows of Kirimanjaro". The picture was taken in Africa in the foot of Kirimanjaro mountain. Gregory Peck acted for Hemingway injured by tenanus and waited for rescue plain to come. He felt his end of life to come and looked back in the camping bed for passed wonderful life. Many images came and went in his mind's eye that experienced meeting and parting with a lot of women and joined Spanish civil war, WWI and WWII as a soldier and journalist.
He lived in Ritz Hotel in Paris and enjoyed party every day with his friends. After WWII was over in 1956, he again had a chance to stay at Ritz and then found his old trunks accidentally that he left before WWI in 1928. When he opened and saw it, he found his files and notebook that encouraged him to start again for his new life. This story represents how Ritz is linked by fate for his gorgeous life in Paris. He ended his own life by gun in 1981.
It's boring to stay home so long days. I have nothing to do besides cleaning up the room. Wiping furniture makes me refresh and change pace. It also help me to find forgotten things and I am seeing them with nostalgic mind.
Yesterday I found old newspaper of July 2003. It said in the front page that WHO declared to terminate SARS. I had few memory for SARS as Japan was not damaged so seriously. China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea had huge infected people totally over 8000 which 10 % of them were killed. It was developed in Guandong in China. New coronavirus was also developed in Wuhan and I wonder why China always be a source of infection.
Anyway, a friend of mine is tennis lover who sent me a interesting youtube that was called Federer challenge. Things is how many times to continue the volley with hitting the wall. Federer did it over 200 times a minute ! It is incredible to hit the ball from such a short distance ! I am enjoying to challenge for it in my garden and it helps me to kill time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otQ4jTRR1aY
