Mafia in WWII

I have a German friend. We used to discuss that German and Japanese are common sense of culture that both are strict for time keeping and social discipline. Although both are defeated nation, their economic recovery were tremendous due to the industrial power. The manufacturing culture might have closely related to this sense.

In WWII, both concluded Tripartite Pact between Japan Germany and Italy. But we jokingly say that we would fight just us next time without Italy. Italy was too weak. I wonder why Italy lost fighting spirit ?

Reading a book of Sicily mafia, I found that american mafia landed prior to the disembarkation of allied force and persuaded Italian soldier to go back to home. Now I understood. Italian mafia was stronger than nation.
